About All Saints' Day

All Saints' Day, Toussaint, on 1 November is a public holiday in France. Although the Church sets aside the following day for the dead, in France the holiday itself has become the main occasion for honouring deceased family members, and it falls during a school holiday period that takes its name.

Traditions

Families visit cemeteries to clean and decorate the graves of relatives. Chrysanthemums are the traditional flowers for this purpose, and pots of them are sold in large numbers in the days before the holiday, so much so that in France the flower is strongly associated with mourning.
