About Assumption Day

Assumption Day on 15 August celebrates the belief that the Virgin Mary was taken up body and soul into heaven at the end of her earthly life. It is one of the main Marian feasts, and the Catholic Church defined the Assumption as dogma in 1950. Orthodox churches mark the same date as the Dormition of the Mother of God.

Traditions
