About King's Day

King's Day on 27 April celebrates the birthday of King Willem-Alexander. It continues a royal birthday holiday that began in the late nineteenth century as Princess's Day for the future Queen Wilhelmina. Under Queen Juliana and Queen Beatrix it was held on 30 April as Queen's Day, and it was renamed after Willem-Alexander became king in 2013.

Traditions

People dress in orange, the colour of the House of Orange-Nassau, and streets fill with flea markets known as vrijmarkt, where anyone may sell second-hand goods. Towns host music, games and parties, Amsterdam's canals fill with boats, and the royal family visits one or more towns to take part in local festivities.
