About Day of Slavonic Alphabet, Bulgarian Enlightenment and Culture
This holiday on 24 May honours the brothers Saints Cyril and Methodius, who created the Glagolitic alphabet in the ninth century for the Slavonic language, and their disciples, who developed Slavonic literacy in the First Bulgarian Empire, where the Cyrillic script took shape. The day celebrates the Bulgarian alphabet, education, culture and Slavonic literature.
Traditions
Schools, universities and cultural institutions hold celebrations. Pupils, students and teachers take part in festive processions in towns and cities, often carrying flowers and portraits of the two brothers. Concerts and readings are organised, and people commonly congratulate teachers and people working in education and culture.
