About New Year's Day
New Year's Day on 1 January is a public holiday in Bulgaria. It is also the feast day of Saint Basil the Great in the Orthodox calendar, known in Bulgaria as Vasilyovden, and people named Vasil or Vasilka celebrate their name day.
Traditions
A well-known custom is survakane: children tap relatives and neighbours on the back with a survachka, a cornel branch decorated with coloured thread, popcorn and dried fruit, while reciting wishes for health and prosperity, and receive small gifts or money in return. A banitsa with small lucky charms or written wishes baked inside is a familiar part of the New Year celebrations.
