About Dormition of the Mother of God
The Dormition of the Mother of God, Koimisi tis Theotokou, on 15 August commemorates the end of the earthly life of the Virgin Mary. It is one of the major feasts of the Orthodox Church, is preceded by a two-week fast, and is one of the most important religious holidays of the summer in Greece.
Traditions
Many people make pilgrimages to churches and monasteries dedicated to the Virgin Mary, notably the Church of Panagia Evangelistria on the island of Tinos. Villages and islands hold festivals, panigyria, with music, dancing and food. It is also a name day for people named Maria, Panagiotis, Despina and similar names.
