About New Year's Day
New Year's Day, Protochronia, on 1 January is a public holiday in Greece. In the Orthodox calendar it is also the feast of Saint Basil the Great, Agios Vasilis, who in Greek tradition is the figure who brings gifts to children, and people named Vasilis or Vasiliki celebrate their name day.
Traditions
Families cut the vasilopita, a sweet bread or cake with a coin hidden inside, around midnight or on New Year's Day. Slices are given in order to household members, and the person who finds the coin is said to have luck for the year. Children sing the New Year kalanda, carols, from house to house on New Year's Eve.
