About Easter Sunday
Easter Sunday, Niedziela Wielkanocna, is one of the most important religious feasts in Poland, where most of the population is Catholic. It is celebrated according to the Western church calendar, and both Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are public holidays.
Traditions
On Holy Saturday families take a decorated basket, the święconka, with eggs, bread, salt, sausage and other foods to church to be blessed. These foods are shared at a festive Easter breakfast, which begins with exchanging wishes over a blessed egg. Typical dishes include żurek, a sour rye soup, ham, sausages, and cakes such as babka and mazurek.
