About National Day of the Third of May

The National Day of the Third of May, often called Constitution Day, commemorates the Constitution of 3 May 1791, adopted by the Great Sejm of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It sought to reform the state and strengthen its government, and it is often described as the first modern written national constitution in Europe. The day is also the Catholic feast of the Virgin Mary, Queen of Poland.

Traditions

Official state ceremonies are held in Warsaw and other cities, including wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. White and red national flags are displayed on buildings and homes across the country, and the day forms part of the majówka long weekend.
