About Freedom Day

Freedom Day, on 27 April, marks the anniversary of South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994, in which citizens of all races could vote for the first time. The elections ended the apartheid system of government and led to Nelson Mandela becoming the country's first democratically elected president.

Traditions

A national celebration is usually held with speeches by government leaders, while communities hold cultural events, concerts and gatherings. The day is used to reflect on the transition to democracy and on the meaning of citizenship and voting.
