About Human Rights Day

Human Rights Day, on 21 March, commemorates the Sharpeville massacre of 1960, when police opened fire on a crowd protesting against the pass laws, which restricted the movement of Black South Africans. Sixty-nine people were killed. The day honours those who struggled for human rights in South Africa and affirms the rights protected by the Constitution.

Traditions

Official commemorations are often held at Sharpeville, where a memorial marks the site of the shootings. Speeches, community events and educational activities focus on the Bill of Rights and on remembering the victims. Internationally, 21 March is also observed by the United Nations as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
