About Ascension Day
Ascension Day commemorates the ascension of Jesus into heaven, which according to the New Testament took place forty days after the resurrection. It is therefore observed on a Thursday, 39 days after Easter Sunday. Because it depends on Easter, Western and Orthodox churches often observe it on different dates.
Traditions
Church services are held to mark the feast. In some countries the holiday is used for family outings or a long weekend, and various regions have their own local customs connected with the day.
