About Ascension Day

Ascension Day is a public holiday throughout Germany, falling on the Thursday forty days after Easter. Alongside its religious meaning, the day has acquired a secular character in Germany as Vatertag (Father's Day), also called Herrentag or Männertag in some regions, which gives it a distinctive local identity.

Traditions

As Vatertag, the day is known for groups of men going on hikes or bicycle tours, often pulling a small handcart loaded with food and drinks. Families also use the long weekend for excursions, while churches hold services for the feast.
