About Epiphany

Epiphany on 6 January is a Christian feast that concludes the twelve days of Christmas. In Western churches it mainly commemorates the visit of the Magi, the wise men who brought gifts to the infant Jesus. In Eastern churches the feast, often called Theophany, centres on the baptism of Jesus in the river Jordan. Churches that follow the Julian calendar observe it on 19 January.

Traditions

Customs differ widely. In some countries children receive presents or a special cake is shared, and processions recall the journey of the Magi. In Orthodox tradition priests bless water, often at a river, lake or the sea, and worshippers take blessed water home.
