About Saint Brigid's Day
Saint Brigid's Day honours Saint Brigid of Kildare, one of Ireland's patron saints, whose feast day is 1 February. The date also coincides with Imbolc, the traditional Gaelic festival marking the beginning of spring. The public holiday was first observed in 2023 and is held on the first Monday of February, or on 1 February when that date falls on a Friday. It is the first Irish public holiday named after a woman.
Traditions
A well-known custom is weaving Saint Brigid's crosses from rushes, which are traditionally hung in homes to bring protection. Schools, community groups and cultural organisations hold events celebrating Brigid, the arrival of spring and the contributions of women in Irish life.
