About Saint Stephen's Day

Saint Stephen's Day, on 26 December, honours Stephen, traditionally regarded as the first Christian martyr. In Ireland it is a public holiday known in Irish as Lá Fhéile Stiofáin, and it has its own distinctive folk customs alongside the general Christian feast.

Traditions

In parts of the country, groups known as Wren Boys or Wrenboys go from house to house in costumes and masks, playing music and singing, a custom known as hunting the wren. The day is also traditionally associated with horse racing meetings and visiting family and friends.
