About Saint Patrick's Day
Saint Patrick's Day, on 17 March, honours Saint Patrick, the fifth-century missionary credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland and the country's best-known patron saint. The date is traditionally held to be the day of his death. It is Ireland's national holiday and is also celebrated by Irish communities around the world.
Traditions
Parades take place in towns and cities across the country, with the largest in Dublin as part of a festival lasting several days. People wear green and sprigs of shamrock, which tradition says Patrick used to explain the Holy Trinity. Many attend Mass, and music, dancing and family gatherings are common.
