About Liberation Day

Liberation Day marks 25 April 1945, when the National Liberation Committee for Northern Italy called a general insurrection against the German occupation and the Fascist Italian Social Republic. Partisan forces took control of major northern cities in the following days. The date symbolises the end of Fascism and of the Second World War in Italy.

Traditions

The President of the Republic lays a wreath at the Altare della Patria in Rome. Marches and commemorations take place across the country, often organised with the national association of former partisans, and the partisan song "Bella ciao" is widely sung.
