About National Unity Day
National Unity and Armed Forces Day commemorates the end of the First World War for Italy. The Armistice of Villa Giusti with Austria-Hungary took effect on 4 November 1918, and with it Trento and Trieste were joined to Italy, which was seen as completing national unification. The day also honours the Italian armed forces and those who died in war.
Traditions
The President of the Republic lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Altare della Patria in Rome. Commemorations are held at war memorials across the country, and military barracks and installations may be opened to the public.
