About Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities
Held on 10 June, the anniversary of the death of the poet Luís de Camões in 1580, this is Portugal's national day. Camões is best known for the epic poem Os Lusíadas, which recounts Vasco da Gama's voyage to India. The day also honours Portuguese communities living abroad.
Traditions
The President of the Republic leads the official celebrations, which include a military ceremony and the award of national honours, held in a different city each year and sometimes in a country with a large Portuguese community. Events are also organised by Portuguese communities around the world.
