About Republic Day

Republic Day commemorates the revolution of 5 October 1910, which ended the Portuguese monarchy and established the First Republic. The republic was proclaimed from the balcony of Lisbon City Hall. The holiday was suspended from 2013 to 2015 as an austerity measure and has been observed again since 2016.

Traditions

The main official ceremony takes place in Lisbon at the City Hall, where the national flag is raised on the balcony from which the republic was proclaimed and the President of the Republic gives a speech.
