About Democracy and National Unity Day
Democracy and National Unity Day on 15 July commemorates the attempted military coup of 15 July 2016 and the people who opposed it. During the night of the attempt many civilians went into the streets to resist, and more than two hundred people lost their lives. The day was added to Türkiye's public holidays after these events.
Traditions
Memorial ceremonies are held across the country to remember those who died, often referred to as martyrs. Commemorative events, rallies and exhibitions take place, particularly in Istanbul and Ankara, and mosques hold special prayers.
