About National Sovereignty and Children's Day
National Sovereignty and Children's Day on 23 April marks the opening of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye in Ankara in 1920, during the War of Independence, which established the principle that sovereignty belongs to the nation. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk dedicated the day to the children of the country as its future.
Traditions
Schools hold ceremonies and performances, and children take part in parades and shows. Symbolically, children take the seats of officials for the day, including in the Grand National Assembly. Children from many other countries are traditionally invited to take part in an international children's festival, and the national flag is displayed widely.
