About Benito Juárez's birthday
This holiday honours Benito Juárez, born on 21 March 1806 in Oaxaca to a Zapotec family. He served as president during the Reform War and the French intervention and led the restoration of the republic in 1867. He is remembered for the Reform Laws separating church and state and for the phrase that respect for the rights of others is peace. The holiday is observed on the third Monday of March.
Traditions
Civic ceremonies are held at monuments to Juárez, including the Hemiciclo a Juárez in Mexico City's Alameda Central, and in his home state of Oaxaca. Schools often mark the date with lessons and events about his life. The holiday also coincides roughly with the spring equinox, when many people visit archaeological sites such as Teotihuacan.
