About Labor Day

Labour Day, the Día del Trabajo, is held on 1 May as International Workers' Day. It honours workers and the labour movement and recalls the nineteenth-century struggle for an eight-hour working day, including the Chicago events of 1886. In Mexico it is a statutory rest day under federal labour law.

Traditions

Trade unions and workers' organisations march in Mexico City, often towards the Zócalo, and in other cities, raising demands about wages and working conditions. For many people it is also a day of rest with family.
