About Independence Day
Independence Day commemorates the start of Mexico's war of independence from Spain. In the early hours of 16 September 1810, the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the church bell in the town of Dolores and called on the people to rise up, an event known as the Grito de Dolores. Independence was achieved in 1821.
Traditions
On the night of 15 September, the President re-enacts the Grito from the balcony of the National Palace before crowds in Mexico City's Zócalo, ringing the bell and shouting "Viva México". Mayors and governors do the same across the country. A military parade follows on 16 September. Typical dishes include pozole and chiles en nogada, and streets are decorated in green, white and red.
