About National Day

Austria's National Day on 26 October commemorates the adoption by parliament in 1955 of the constitutional law declaring the country's permanent neutrality. The law followed the Austrian State Treaty of that year, which restored full sovereignty after the post-war Allied occupation. The date became the national holiday in the 1960s.

Traditions

The Austrian Armed Forces present themselves to the public with a large display on Vienna's Heldenplatz, where new recruits are also sworn in. Government buildings, including the Federal Chancellery and the Parliament, often open their doors to visitors, and many people take part in organised walks and outdoor activities.
