About National Day

Sweden's National Day on 6 June recalls two events: the election of Gustav Vasa as king in 1523, seen as the beginning of the modern Swedish state, and the adoption of a new constitution in 1809. Long celebrated as Swedish Flag Day, it was renamed National Day in 1983 and became a public holiday in 2005.

Traditions

Flags are flown across the country and many municipalities hold ceremonies to welcome new Swedish citizens. The King and Queen traditionally take part in celebrations at the Skansen open-air museum in Stockholm, and local festivities with music and speeches are held in many towns.
