About Easter Sunday
Easter Sunday, Påskdagen, is a public holiday in Sweden within a long Easter weekend that runs from Good Friday to Easter Monday. Swedish Easter combines Christian observance with folk customs, some of which date back to old beliefs about witches flying away at Easter time.
Traditions
In the days before Easter, children dress up as Easter witches and visit neighbours, offering drawings in exchange for sweets. Homes are decorated with birch twigs adorned with coloured feathers, and families gather for an Easter buffet with eggs, pickled herring, salmon and lamb, while children receive paper eggs filled with sweets.
