About Midsummer Day
Midsummer Day, Midsommardagen, is a public holiday in Sweden on the Saturday between 20 and 26 June, close to the summer solstice. Although the official holiday is the Saturday, the main celebrations take place on Midsummer Eve, the preceding Friday, which for many Swedes is one of the most important days of the year.
Traditions
On Midsummer Eve people raise a maypole decorated with leaves and flowers and dance around it to traditional songs. Many wear flower wreaths in their hair. The meal typically includes pickled herring, new potatoes with dill, sour cream and chives, and strawberries, often with schnapps and drinking songs. Midsummer Day itself is usually calm.
