About National Day

Spain's National Day, the Fiesta Nacional de España, is held on 12 October, the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas in 1492, an event that began centuries of Spanish presence across the Atlantic. The day is also known as the Día de la Hispanidad and celebrates the ties between Spain and the Spanish-speaking world.

Traditions

The main official event is a military parade in Madrid presided over by the King, followed by a reception at the Royal Palace. The same date is the feast of Our Lady of the Pillar, so Zaragoza holds its Fiestas del Pilar, including a large offering of flowers to the Virgin.
