About National Day
Romania's National Day on 1 December commemorates the Great Union of 1918, when an assembly of delegates in Alba Iulia proclaimed the union of Transylvania with the Kingdom of Romania. Together with the earlier unions with Bessarabia and Bukovina in the same year, it brought most Romanian-speaking territories into a single state.
Traditions
A military parade is held in Bucharest, passing through the Arcul de Triumf, and large commemorations take place in Alba Iulia. Flags are displayed across the country. A traditional dish served to the public at many celebrations is fasole cu cârnați, a bean stew with smoked sausage.
