About Christmas Day
Christmas, Crăciunul, is celebrated in Romania on 25 December, as the Romanian Orthodox Church follows the Revised Julian calendar for fixed feasts. Both 25 and 26 December are public holidays. The feast follows a forty-day fast, and the celebrations, with family gatherings and church services, continue through the following days into the New Year period.
Traditions
Carolling, or colindat, is a central custom: children and groups of young people go from house to house on Christmas Eve singing colinde and receive sweets, fruit or money. Some groups carry a star, steaua, representing the star of Bethlehem. Traditional festive foods include sarmale, cabbage rolls with meat, pork dishes and cozonac.
