About Saint Andrew's Day
Saint Andrew's Day on 30 November honours Saint Andrew the Apostle, the first of the apostles called by Jesus. According to Romanian church tradition, he preached the Gospel in Scythia Minor, the area of present-day Dobruja, and he is regarded as the patron saint of Romania. The day is a public holiday.
Traditions
Church services are held, and the Cave of Saint Andrew in Dobruja is a place of pilgrimage. In folk tradition the night before the feast is associated with protection against evil spirits, and garlic is placed at windows and doors. The day is also a name day for people named Andrei or Andreea.
