About Easter
Easter, Paștele, is celebrated in Romania according to the Orthodox calendar, so it often falls on a different date from Easter in Western churches. It is the most important religious feast of the year in Romania, and both Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are public holidays.
Traditions
On the night before Easter Sunday people attend the Resurrection service and take home lit candles. They greet one another with "Hristos a înviat!" (Christ is risen), answered with "Adevărat a înviat!" (Truly he is risen). Red-dyed eggs are cracked against each other, and the festive meal typically includes lamb dishes, cozonac, a sweet bread, and pască, a traditional Easter cake.
