About New Year's Day

In Romania both 1 and 2 January are public holidays, giving the New Year celebrations two days. The holiday follows New Year's Eve, known as Revelion, which is usually celebrated with family gatherings, parties and fireworks at midnight. The winter holiday season continues a few days later with Epiphany and the feast of Saint John.

Traditions

Folk customs of the season include Plugușorul, in which groups of children or young men go from house to house around New Year's Eve reciting verses about ploughing and wishing a rich harvest, often with bells and whips. On New Year's morning children carry the sorcova, a decorated stick with artificial flowers, touching people with it while reciting wishes for health and long life.
