About Unification of the Romanian Principalities Day
This holiday on 24 January marks the union of Moldavia and Wallachia in 1859, when Alexandru Ioan Cuza, already elected prince of Moldavia, was also elected prince of Wallachia. The double election joined the two principalities under one ruler and is regarded as the foundation of the modern Romanian state. It is sometimes called the Little Union, as distinct from the Great Union of 1918.
Traditions
Official ceremonies are held, particularly in Iași and in Focșani, a town on the historical border between the two principalities, as well as in Bucharest. People gather in public squares to dance the Hora Unirii, the Union round dance, which is associated with the event.
