About Dr. B. R. Ambedkar's Jayanti
Ambedkar Jayanti, on 14 April, marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, born in 1891. A jurist, economist and social reformer, he chaired the drafting committee of the Constitution of India and was the country's first Law Minister. He campaigned against caste discrimination and for the rights of Dalits and other marginalised groups.
Traditions
People pay tribute at statues and memorials of Ambedkar, and processions, lectures and cultural programmes are held, particularly in Maharashtra. Many of his followers also visit sites associated with him, such as Deekshabhoomi in Nagpur, where he embraced Buddhism in 1956.
