About Independence Day

Independence Day, on 15 August, marks the end of British rule and the independence of India in 1947, following a long freedom movement in which millions of people took part. It is one of India's three national holidays, along with Republic Day and Gandhi Jayanti, and is observed across the whole country.

Traditions

The Prime Minister raises the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi and delivers an address to the nation. Flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural programmes and parades are held in schools, offices and communities across the country, and kite flying is a popular custom in Delhi and parts of northern India.
