About Mahatma Gandhi's Jayanti
Gandhi Jayanti, on 2 October, marks the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, born in 1869, who led the Indian independence movement through non-violent resistance. It is one of India's three national holidays. The United Nations observes the same date as the International Day of Non-Violence.
Traditions
Prayer meetings are held, including at Raj Ghat in Delhi, the memorial at the site of Gandhi's cremation, where national leaders pay tribute. His favourite devotional songs are sung, and schools and organisations hold events on his ideas, along with community cleaning drives.
