About Coming of Age Day
Coming of Age Day congratulates young people who have reached adulthood and encourages them to take on its responsibilities. Established in 1948, it was originally held on 15 January and has been observed on the second Monday of January since 2000. Although the legal age of majority was lowered from 20 to 18 in 2022, many municipalities continue to hold their ceremonies for those turning 20.
Traditions
Local governments hold coming-of-age ceremonies, seijin-shiki, with speeches and celebrations. Many young women wear furisode, a long-sleeved formal kimono, while young men wear suits or traditional hakama. Participants often take formal photographs and meet former classmates afterwards.
