About National Holiday
Under Japan's national holidays law, a weekday that falls between two national holidays becomes a holiday itself, known as Kokumin no Kyūjitsu, the citizens' holiday. In September this happens only in certain years, when Respect for the Aged Day and Autumnal Equinox Day are separated by a single day. The resulting run of days off is popularly called Silver Week, by analogy with Golden Week in the spring.
