About Labor Thanksgiving Day

Labour Thanksgiving Day, Kinrō Kansha no Hi, is a day for honouring work, celebrating production and giving thanks to one another. Established in 1948, it has its roots in Niinamesai, an ancient harvest ritual in which the emperor offers the year's newly harvested rice to the deities and partakes of it.

Traditions

The Niinamesai ritual is still performed by the Emperor at the Imperial Palace. Elsewhere, schoolchildren often make drawings or cards to thank people in their communities such as police officers, firefighters and other workers, and some local events celebrate agriculture and local produce.
