About Substitute Holiday
A substitute holiday, furikae kyūjitsu, is given when a national holiday falls on a Sunday. Under Japan's national holidays law, the next day that is not already a holiday becomes a day off in its place. The system was introduced in 1973. Because several holidays fall close together in early May, the substitute day can come two or three days after the holiday it replaces.
