About Greenery Day
Greenery Day, Midori no Hi, is a day to enjoy nature, appreciate its benefits and cultivate a generous spirit. The name was first given in 1989 to the holiday on 29 April, the birthday of the late Emperor Shōwa, who was known for his interest in plant science. In 2007 Greenery Day moved to 4 May, when 29 April became Showa Day.
Traditions
As part of Golden Week, the day is often spent outdoors, visiting parks and gardens or travelling. Some public parks, gardens and zoos offer free admission, and tree-planting and nature events are held in various places.
