About All Souls' Day
In Brazil, All Souls' Day is known as Finados, from Dia de Finados, the day of the departed. It is a national public holiday devoted to remembering deceased relatives and friends. The observance comes from the Catholic tradition, but many Brazilians of other faiths also use the day to honour their dead.
Traditions
Families visit cemeteries to clean and decorate graves with flowers and to light candles, and many attend Masses celebrated for the dead, including services held inside cemeteries. In large cities, the number of visitors to cemeteries rises sharply over the day.
