About Republic Proclamation Day
Republic Proclamation Day marks 15 November 1889, when a military movement led by Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca overthrew the monarchy in Rio de Janeiro and proclaimed Brazil a republic. Emperor Pedro II and the imperial family were sent into exile in Europe, and Deodoro became head of the provisional government and later the first president.
Traditions
The day is marked mainly by official ceremonies, flag-raisings and civic events. For most Brazilians it is a day of rest, and when it falls near a weekend many people take a short trip.
