About National Day of Zumbi and Black Awareness
This day, held on 20 November, honours Zumbi dos Palmares, a leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares, a large community of people who had escaped slavery in the northeast of Brazil. Zumbi was killed on 20 November 1695. The date celebrates Afro-Brazilian history and culture and draws attention to racism and inequality. It became a national public holiday by a law passed in 2023.
Traditions
Events include marches, debates, lectures, concerts and cultural festivals celebrating Afro-Brazilian music, dance, religion and food. Ceremonies are held in the Serra da Barriga in Alagoas, where Palmares was located.
