About Worker's Day
Workers' Day, the Dia do Trabalhador, is held on 1 May as International Workers' Day. It honours workers and the labour movement and recalls the nineteenth-century struggle for an eight-hour working day. In Brazil, the date has long been associated with labour legislation and the minimum wage.
Traditions
Trade union federations organise rallies, demonstrations and public events, often with free concerts, especially in São Paulo. Many people simply use the day off for rest, leisure and time with family.
