About Tiradentes' Day

Tiradentes Day honours Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, known as Tiradentes, a leader of the Inconfidência Mineira, a conspiracy in Minas Gerais against Portuguese colonial rule. The plot was discovered before it could be carried out, and Tiradentes was hanged in Rio de Janeiro on 21 April 1792. He is regarded as a national hero and martyr of Brazilian independence.

Traditions

Official ceremonies are held, particularly in Minas Gerais. In Ouro Preto, the former Vila Rica where the conspiracy was planned, the state government traditionally moves its seat to the city for the day and awards the Inconfidência Medal.
